Is anyone willing to help with what looks like a mammoth project?
FindMyPast.co.uk, in partnership with the British Library, have published online the British Newspapers covering 1710 – 1950. Therefore you will need to have a subscription to this website.
I’ve done a quick check on the number of entries under the various surname spellings, with a few other possibilities, and it produced the following
Baughan 2783
Baughen 301
Baughin 19
Baughon 33
Baughun 11
Baugham 549
Banghan 176
Banghen 28
Banghin 3
Banghon 3
Banghun 2
Bangham 1996
Baffin 17141
Boffin 4725
You can see why you would need a subscription as they charge ‘5 credits’ per record viewed (12 records for £6.95 for 90 days or 56 records for £24.95 for 1 year).
There are obviously mistyping and mis-transcriptions involved. The Baffin entries will include mainly references to Baffin Bay and Island plus to William Baffin the explorer. The Boffin entries will also refer to Charles Dickens’s book and to the term for scientists etc. introduced in the 20th century. There will also be references to companies including the surname.
A spreadsheet needs to be created of the entries made up of Surname Forename (where applicable) Publication County Date Article type
I will also add the Peron Identifier Number (from my data base) when the individual has been identified.
Plus the Image needs to be downloaded.
This is not going to be a quick task and I’m expecting it to take years bearing in mind the size of the task and the need to keep other research going.
If anybody is interested in helping please let me know.
In the meantime I will check with FindMyPast to see if they have any facilities to make this easier. [Update 12/12/12 13:10 FindMyPast has responded and indicate that there are no facilities to make it easier]
