John Baughan – convict in 1869

Yesterday I purchased ‘Oxford Gaol Prisoner Portraits 1870 – 1881 Volume 6 – Crimes in the Bicester area’ (published by the Oxfordshire Black Sheep Publications). On page 19 there is a description of a John Baughan who was convicted of Horse Stealing in 1869. What is particularly interesting is that it gives his photograph and signature.

At this point in time I haven’t identified who this John Baughan is. Many of the Baughan localities in Oxfordshire are mentioned but it indicates he came from London. Where he was before and afterwards in the various census is unclear as there is nothing that seems to tie up. I’ve attached a PDF with the conviction sentence and the article from the above publications. If you are able to help with any more information please let me know.

The PDF is at www.baughen.co.uk/PDFs/John BAUGHAN convict extract.pdf

(I think the ‘RW Well’ means Reads and Writes well)
